The disease bullous pemphigoid result in the destruction of protein within the basement membrane that holds the epidermis and dermis together. How would this likely affect the epidermis? Would the skin be an effective barrier to this disease?

The main physical barrier is the epidermis. The dermis contains all the nerve endings and hair follicles. When you get a blister, the affected skin area fills with water. While the blister is still protective, it is technically disconnected from the dermis layer.
