What is the cause of friction, and in what direction does it act with respect to the motion of a sliding object?

Friction, only if mentioned, acts in the opposite direction of the object's motion.  Friction is caused by the abbrasion between the object with the surface.  The weight of the object and the force applied upon the object determine the friction that an object experiences.
