I searched on google and everything, but it didn't say how he contributed to the atomic theory. I know about the gold foil experiment, but I don't really understand it. Please help. I did the search, I just couldn't find the right answers.

The model of the atom at that time was called, " the plum pudding model ", because it was thought that the space of the atom was positively charged and that electrons, negatively charged, were strewn through the atom like a pudding.
Rutherford, expecting this result, shot alpha particles through a gold foil and  was quite surprised when, not only did particles sway from their course, but shot back in an angel that was almost180 degrees straight back. From this it was concluded that the atom had a solid nucleus positively charged.
