Potential difference is the voltage. The simplest way to think of it is to picture a battery of say 12 volts, and from one terminal to the other there is connected a string of three resistors in a row, or in 'series'. Current will flow from one battery terminal through the string of resistors and back to the battery at the other terminal. And lets suppose further that all the resistors are the same in value. Since the battery has an output potential of 12 volts, the potential across the resistor string will also be 12 volts. And since all the resistors are the same they will split the potential equally so that 4 volts will be measured across each resistor adding up to 12 volts for the chain. See the drawing in the link provided.
