I want to start a coconut tree behind my house and I want to know if there is a difference between green and yellow coconuts?

There are different nut colors like Green,Red,Orange,Yellow etc. But The real difference is its Genetic diversity like Dwarf and Tall coconut trees and peculiar ones like Spike less variety, varieties with  more nut water, different shell thickness, Kernel loose or compact, adaptability to different stresses etc.
If you want some ornamental and nut water promising types you can have Malayan green, orange or yellow dwarf trees.

A yellow coconut is Malaysian. A green coconut is one that is unripe, and is mainly used for coconut milk/juice. When fully ripe most coconuts turn brown.
Also in the 50 United States coconuts can only be grown in Hawaii and south Florida.
