Echelle spectrometers utilize the Echelle grating and order-sorting devices.  Whereas the spectrum from a Paschen-Runge mount is linear with respect to wavelengths, light from an Echelle spectrometer is separated into a two-deminsional parallelogram style layout called an Echelle-o-gram.

The resolution of the Echelle is much better than that of the Paschen-Runge system. Higher orders can be used (20-120 is not uncommon) and interelement interference is eliminated.
