The diaphysis s the main or midsection (shaft) of a long bone. It is made up of cortical bone and usually contains bone marrow and adipose tissue (fat). It's a middle tubular part composed of compact bone which surrounds a central marrow cavity which contains red or yellow marrow.

Proximal means the area situated nearest to point of attachment or origin. Now put those two meanings together Smiling Face with Open Mouth

Diaphysis is the shaft of a long bone and proximal means nearest to the point of attachment.. so basically, in other words, closest to your torso.
