The optical luminosity of a quasar or the nucleus of an active galaxy is believed by many astronomers to arise from

(a)   gases heated by rotational friction in an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole.
(b)   gases that gain tremendous amounts of energy and heat as they fall toward and eventually through the event horizon of a supermassive black hole.
(c)   gases that are heated as they are ejected in jets from an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole.
