A staff nurse finds a newly licensed, newly hired staff nurse crying in the break room halfway through a shift. The new nurse says, “I am just not getting this. I had no idea nursing would be this hard.” The experienced nurse says, “Reality shock is terrible, but you will get through it.” What does the nurse mean by reality shock?
1. A period of time when it becomes clear the new nurse is not able to function as a registered nurse
2. A period of surprise and disequilibrium about the nursing role
3. A period when expectations of the role are unclear
4. A period of time when managers determine if the new nurse is a good fit for the profession of nursing

A newly promoted nurse manager would like staff to solve problems without relying on preconceived ideas. How should the manager role-model this ability?
1. When disagreements occur on the unit, the manager privately asks the dissenters to be silent about the issue at meetings.
2. Tell staff members that they must present one opinion regarding the solutions they desire.
3. Demonstrate a genuine desire to find our why there is dissention.
4. Develop “tunnel vision” when it comes to problems on the unit.
