1,2,3 -- Fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, and alcohol relax the lower esophageal sphincter or delay gastric emptying, so they should be avoided. Acidic foods such as tomato products, citrus fruits, spicy foods, and coffee should be eliminated from the diet. The patient should be advised to eat smaller meals, refrain from eating for three hours before bedtime, stay upright for two hours after meals, and maintain ideal body weight. Elevating the head of the bed on 6- to 8-inch blocks often is beneficial. Stopping smoking is a necessary lifestyle change. Avoiding tight clothing and avoiding bending may help to relieve symptoms.
