I understand how neurotransmitters function and all, but I'm still not sure if a specific neuron can only release one specific type of neurotransmitter. For instance, could a neuron potentially release both epinephrine and GABA, depending upon need?

That depends on the neuron. In the autonomic nervous system all sympathetic preganglionic neurons are cholinergic (the neuron that synapses with a ganglion releases acetylcholine) There are thousands of different types of neurons in the body and each one serves a different function. So to answer your question, some neurons can only release a certain neurotransmitter and others can release multiple types of neurotransmitters.
