The correct answer is the preganglionic sympathetic nerve.  The adrenal medulla is very similar to postganglionic  sympathetic neurons which release norepinephrine at target sites, except that the adrenal medulla releases norepinephrine and epinephrine directly into the blood, like other endocrine glands.  Remember, the sympathetic nervous system has its preganglionic neuron cell bodies in the spinal cord of the thoracic and lumbar regions, and these preganglionic neurons synapse with the postganglionic neurons in the peripheral ganglia, except that the preganglionic neurons that go to the adrenal medulla synapse on glandular tissue rather than on neurons.
