I know that mutations answer for most genetic variation in bacteria,but since plants/animals do not reproduce asexually, mutations can be masked, so some other factor has to cause major changes.

The constant mix and match of sexual reproduction is the main cause of genetic variation.  There is some variation due to inaccurate copying of DNA (various causes, radiation, disease, etc)but this doesn't usually cause much variation in a species. Too much of a change in any one generation cuts the chances of successful reproduction ( the chance of mere survival is cut back too).

The variation you can see is the slow accumulation of small reproducible changes done through plain old sex.

Meiosis.

Probability of human genome outcomes:
Assuming No crossover and each pair has one heterozygous locus.

223= 8.0x106

This is for one parent where 23 represents the number of chromosomal pairs. So for some sweet love making:

8.0x106 x 8.0x106 = 6.4x1013 gametic possibilities.

That's some serious diversity, but then you must go further down the rabbit hole with crossovers, mutations, inversions, translocations, etc.
