The difference between facilitated and active transport is pretty slim. The biggest difference is that active transport moves against the concentration gradients and needs ATP or energy. Facilitated diffusion is for items that are moving with the concentration gradient so it is passive but are too large to pass through the membrane. There are special channels that the item can flow through passively. Active transport requires energy because it is moving against the concentration gradient. Think of it like trying to swim upstream it cannot be done passively.
