So there's 5 years of medical school and then 2 foundation years. What would you do during those foundation years? And what is after? Do you need to specialize further? And for how long?

Any specialty generally takes about 12 yrs to complete.

4 yrs for a bachelor degree
2 for the masters
2 for the doctorate
3-5 for additional specialty

IN THE UK.... (why is that so hard for people to understand?!):

After F2 you do 2 years of core surgical training, and you need to pass the IMRCS, then apply for cardiothoracics specialty training (ST).
ST lasts 6 years. After this, although in theory you can apply for consultant jobs, I suspect many might do fellowships to specialise further.

That's without taking time out to do research of course...
