Collagen is composed of three subunits, the alpha chains. The alpha chains are formed individually and they then interact with each other to form the triple-helical collagen molecule. Discuss the structure of collagen, how the triple helix forms, and the forces that hold it together.

Collagen is made up of three left handed helices each consisting of 3 residues per turn twisted over each other in a right handed manner. Gly-Pro- hyPro is often the repeating units. The well packed collagen triple helix forms bundles and are stabilized by lysine –histidine and other crosslinks.
