Antabuse stops oxidizing acetaldehyde into acetic acid, and the body accumulates 5 to 10 times more acetaldehyde as compared to the amount of it formed in the system when the same dose of alcohol is taken without Antabuse. As a result, the person feels very uneasy and stops drinking for that reason.

Naltrexone blocks the so called opiate receptors in the brain (they may me called 'pleasure areas'). As a result, when alcohol is combined with Naltrexone, its euphoric effects are noticeably decreased, and the urge for drinking lessens.
