gram positive bacteria can be killed with antibiotics
the differences between these bacterial are the peptidoglycans in their cell walls. because of this, gram positive bacteria are more senstive to antibiotics than gram negatives

Gram positive bacteria are purple because they have cell walls.  While staining you use crystal violet and then iodine to set the stain...if the bacteria are gram positive (or have cell walls), they will retain the stain.  Gram negative bacteria cannot hold the stain because they lack the cell walls.

It is important to know whether or not the bacteria is gram positive or negative because this will determine what antibiotic to put the patient on.
