In an experiment you are actively controlling the variables to test for different outcomes. In an observational study the researcher does nothing but collect data from different sources.

If you manipulate something, and see what happens as a result of the change that you've made, that is an experiment. In an observation, you simply observe what occurs without actually changing anything.

The thing you change in an experiment is called the independent variable. The thing you are observing to detect change as a result is the dependent variable
