why are proteins found on cell membrane? and are they in a form of glycoproteins? what is glycolipids btw?

Proteins on the membrane serve a variety of purposes.  For one, they act as "id tags" so the body can recognize its own cells vs. invaders.  Also, they help in transporting substances into/out of the cell.  They can also recognize signals from outside the cell, and begin processes inside the cell (like something in the cell being activated by a hormone).   They also aid in anchoring cells or connecting them to each other, and for communicating between cells.

The prefix "glyco" means that a sugar is attached. Glycolipids are membrane components composed of lipids that are covalently bonded to monosaccharides or polysaccharides.
