The difference of two squares is of the form a² ? b². If a or b contain coefficients, they must be perfect squres. For example, x² ? 4y² is the difference of two squares since 4 is a perfect square, but  x² ? 4y² is not since 3 is not a perfect square. I hope that addresses what you were wondering about. (The difference of two squares is a polynomial, just of a special type).
