You hunt for your meat, plant a garden and hire out as a farm hand to the neighbors until you can scratch together some seed.  Or get some credit at the local general store.

Same as now.  You find work elsewhere.  Other people would need help planting their crops, etc.  So you work, save your money, try to find a way out.

Most people will fight real hard to stay alive when they don't have a safety net.

Or you began your life as a sharecropper, buying seed, groceries and supplies on time.
