In discrete math, r must be 0<= r < d where d is the divisor.  How does this work?   For example, when you divide -112 by 13 you get Quotient = -8, Remainder = -8 (13 * (-8) - 8 = -112)?  Clearly, the remainder is actually negative, how do you express this so that r is positive like it calls for?
