1. Explain the importance of metabolic diversity to microbes and how the diversity allows different microbial species to colonize such a wide variety of habitats.

2.  E.coli is an example of a facultative anaerobe.  Explain what this means with respect to oxygen use, and explain the two metabolic pathways that E.coli can use in both presence and absence of oxygen.  Be sure to include the important substrates and byproducts of each of these pathways.

1) inhibition of cell wall synthesis
2) inhibition of protien synthesis
3) injury to plasma membranes
4) inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis
5) inhibition of synthesis of essential metabolites

A facultative anaerobic organism is an organism, usually a bacterium, that makes ATP by aerobic respiration if oxygen is present (oxidative phosphorylation) but is also capable of switching to fermentation.
