Alcohol appeared in nature before alcoholic drinks, because it is made form the same atoms than the rest of the biomolecules. It is the product of many metabolic reactions, or incomplete metabolic reactions.
The OH at the end of the molecule, can swiftly break, and just as easy become a free radical CH3CH2O-, which could damage greatly the cell´s structures.

Alcohol dehydrogenase breaks down alcohols in the body. Too much alcohol in the body, which could be generated by the body itself, becomes toxic and can kill you. So the alcohol dehydrogenase is a good thing.

Bacteria and yeasts in the large intestine metabolize carbohydrate by ethanol fermentation. It is especially obvious when you eat large amount of cabbage and beans, or are lactose intolerant. The end products are ethanol and CO2. You are aware of the CO2 that is expelled from the other end. The ethanol is absorbed into the blood stream, and will be taken care of by the alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver.
