2,3 -- Compartments within limbs can contain nerves, blood vessels, and support bones, and are not able to expand due to fascia or fibrous membranes. A cast applied too tightly over a limb area can exert external pressure that results in compression of a compartment; hemorrhage and edema within the compartment after a fracture, or crush injury can cause the compression of a compartment. Fasciotomy is a treatment that can be used in the management of compartment syndrome. Fat embolism is a complication associated with long bone fractures or crushing injuries. Burn injury does result in compartment syndrome.
