A 30-year-old nurse who works on a busy medical-surgical unit has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The priority for this patient is to do which of the following?
1. Negotiate a regular schedule of working 8-hour dayshifts and consider applying for nursing positions that are less stressful and demanding.
2. Work as hard as possible now because later, it may not be possible.
3. Continue to work as scheduled without making changes.
4. Leave employment as a nurse due to the need for complete bed rest.

This one can have two answers depending on the patients severity with the disease, but from a textbook standpoint, answer #1 is the most likely answer.  As someone who has worked as a nurses aid for 16, diagnosed with MS 2yrs ago, and currently in school for my BScn in Nursing, I personally had to resort to option number one. The biggest life changes needed for managing symptoms of MS are decreasing stress any way you can, and establishing a consistent routine.  Any stress or fluctuation outside of this set routine can trigger a flare-up.  Having said that, depression is also prevalent with any chronic or debilitating illness.  Some people need to maintain their current routine as deviations from this makes them feel inadequate or that the disease is running them or ruling their life which encourages the chance of depression taking place.  Generally speaking though, if they have had a firm diagnosis, this means they would have had some troubling symptoms which may mean they have to instill changes in the way of modifying their working environment.

I agree. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is progressive and will be negatively affected by working long hours and enduring stressful shifts. It is important for this patient to plan a schedule that is less demanding and move now to a work environment that is less stressful for adapting to life with MS.
