4 -- The retina is the innermost lining of the eyeball. It has an outer pigmented layer and an inner neural layer. The transparent inner layer is made up of millions of light receptors in structures called rods and cones. Rods enable vision in dim light as well as peripheral vision. Cones enable vision in bright light and the perception of color. Tear production and blinking are not controlled by the inner retina. Reading will still be possible with this type of injury.
