So, for the famous experiment of the genetics of inheritance, Mendel chose to study the common pea plant based on the following criteria:
it was easily obtainable
easily cultivated
sexual organs of the pea plant were enclosed in the flower (enabling him to control the plants' reproduction)
different pea plants had different traits that were easily observed.

Are there any other organisms that would be just as easy to study? What other kinds of plants share this criteria?

There are many that fit that criteria, but are not considered because of the length of time they take to reproduce.

Most of the other legumes (beans, etc.) would be as easy to study, and would take approximately the same time as peas.
