For each of the following descriptions, I have to give one word. See if the answers are correct.

1) The somatic division of cells that results in diploid daughter cells
Answer: Mitosis

2) The division of cells in the germline that results in haploid gametes
Answer: Meiosis

3) The type of dominance when both alleles have an effect and are not obscured
Answer: Codominance

4) An individual that has two copies of the same allele
Answer: Homozygote

5) An individual that has two different copies of an allele
Answer: Heterozygote

6) Refers to the combination of alleles that underlies a phenotype
Answer: Gene

7) One functional copy of an allele is not sufficient to result in a wildtype phenotype
Answer: Haploinsufficient

8) The phenotype of the heterozygote is intermediate between the homozygotes
Not sure what this is called.

9) The genotype when an otherwise diploid individual only has one copy of an allele
Answer: Homozygote (I think this is wrong but not sure of correct answer)

10) The name for the gender that has two different sex chromosomes (XY or ZW)
Answer: Male
thanks
Is incomplete dominance same as codominance?

for 6 I'd say "genotype".  Gene isn't right.  For 8, they are probably looking for "incomplete dominance"  9 might be monoploid.  I don't know what 10 is, but it's not male, since ZW birds are of course female.

8) Co-Dominant/Incomplete Dominance.
9) Hemizygous
10) Heterogametic

Incomplete dominance is when the phenotype isn't entirely the same as the homozygous dominant one.
Co-dominace is when there isn't a dominant trait, both get about the same expression in phenotype.

They guy above me is right in saying "Genotype" rather than "Gene".

6) Refers to the combination of alleles that underlies a phenotype--Genotype

8) The phenotype of the heterozygote is intermediate between the homozygotes--incomplete dominance

9) The genotype when an otherwise diploid individual only has one copy of an allele--Hemizygous

10) The name for the gender that has two different sex chromosomes (XY or ZW)--Heterogametic

Incomplete dominance and codominance are very distinct. In codominance, both of the alleles are apparent. So, in human blood types the allele for A and the allele for B are codominant. A person who has one copy of each allele has blood type AB. In incomplete dominance, the heterozygote has a phenotype that is half way between the two homozogotes. So, in many plants, the genotype RR has red flowers, the genotype rr produces white flowers, and the genotype Rr has pink flowers.
