Consider the following overall reaction which is experimentally observed to be second order in X and
first order in Y: X + Y ? XY
a) Does the reaction occur in a single step in which X and Y collide? Explain your answer.
b) Is the following two-step mechanism valid? Show work in favor of your answer.
(1) 2 X X2 Fast
(2) X2 + Y ? XY + X Slow

Since the first step of the two step mechanism is the elementary reaction (for elementary reactions, order is nothing but the coefficient infront of the reactant) its order is 2. And the order with respect to Y is reasonably 1 hence the given mechanism is consistent with the observed experimental facts. So the two step mechanism is valid.
