The question is "How would you describe the solution of the salt formed from the reaction of a weak acid and a strong base?" I know the answer is basic, but why?

When a strong acid reacts with a strong base, Ke is 10E14 and the resulting pH is 7 since the H+ and OH- concentrations are equal: the net ionic equation is H+(aq)  +  OH-(aq)  ----> H2O

When the acid is weak, acetic acid, Ka = 1.8x10E-5, Ke is only 5.6x10E10 and the reaction to form the salt is less complete and not all the acid is neutralized leaving some unreacted OH- making the solution basic. the net ionic reaction being:  HAc(aq)  +  OH-(aq)  ----->  OAc-(aq)  +  H2O.
