A piece of wood (2.52cm thick) with the edges sealed with a water-proofing cement was dried from both faces in a tunnel dryer using cross-circulation of air. The initial moisture content was 39.7% on the dry basis. No shrinkage occurred during drying. The equilibrium moisture content was 5% on the dry basis. During the drying process, the moisture content at the surface of the sample was at equilibrium moisture content. The drying process was considered to follow a liquid-diffusion mechanism in the direction perpendicular to the grain. Estimate the average moisture content in the sample after 8 hours. Plot the moisture content profiles for the period from 0 to 5 hours with increment of 1 hour. The diffusion of water in the sample was 9.0 x 10-6 cm2/s.
