It helps preserve the genetic information and gene function of the organism.
In DNA replication, complimentary base pairing allows new DNA strands to be synthesized according to two "zipped open" old strands of a DNA molecule; whereby the two new strands are formed complementing the exact sequence of the old strands. In this way we end up with two newly formed DNA molecules that are completely identical in sequence. Therefore the genetic information has been preserved.
In transcription, complementary base pairing based on the sequence on the template strand of DNA always transcribes the same sequence in mRNA molecules. And likewise in translation, complementary base pairing occurs when specific anti-codons of tRNA molecules are matched with codons on the mRNA molecule, therefore the same sequence of amino acids are assembled together and the same protein is produces. Therefore the gene function has been preserved as well.
