Would the current reading it shows account for resistance, or would that be a possible source of error in determining the current that is flowing through something in the circuit?

Realistically, it has to have some resistance because we are working with real world components.  However, to be as accurate as possible, the internal resistance is as low as possible so as not to load the circuit.  So, yes there is some error, but under practical circumstances it's negligible.
