Refer to figure 5.31. The top panel shows the δ13C values for ocean sedimentary materials. The middle panel shows δ18O record from ocean foraminifera. The bottom panel shows the calcium carbonate content (shells) material found in ocean sediment. Consider the large spike in data appearing in all three panels about 55 million years ago. a) What happened to the CO2 levels in the air above the oceans around 55 million years? b) How did ocean temperatures change? c) What happened to the amount of shelled life at this time and what might have caused this large change?
