A Toonie is dropped into a wishing well by a student wishing to get an A in a physics class.  Exactly 4.75 s later the student hears the coin hit the surface of the water.  Ignoring air resistance and assuming the speed of sound to be 340 m/s, determine the length of the wishing well.

any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi.

Distance = speed x time

Speed is: 340 m/s

Time is: 4.75 s

Distance = 1615 m

Not sure if it's supposed to be this easy. Do we take into account acceleration?

Speed of light does not mean anything in this problem.
We know:

a = 9.8 m/s^2

t = 4.75 s

y = ?

first solve for v by using: a = v / t Rightwards Arrow v = at = (9.8) x (4.75) = 46.55 m/s

Solve for y using: y = (v) x (t) + (0.5) (a) x (t^2) = 337.8 m
