(i) If you are given a quadratic equation to solve, how many solutions should there be? Explain your answer carefully.

(ii) You know that it is possible that the solutions are not real numbers.  How do we determine whether the solutions are real or complex?  If the solutions are complex, what does that mean?

(i) 2 (although they can be the same)

(ii) Imaginary solutions will have a square-root of a negative number. As for what it actually means, it's probably above your level. All you care about is that you can't plot that root on a "normal" graph.
