The Kepler mission searches for Earth-like planets by looking for the dip in the brightness of a star as such a
planet transited across it. Why is this technique actually misses the vast majority of planets?

I believe it has to do with timing. By the time the planet rotates around the star, Kepler isn't able to see it from start to finish because it has moved on.
