I have my GCSE soon and i need help on how to solve equations with variables on both sides..eg: 5x+4=x-12 and then x= -4. We got told we need to know an equation with variables on both sides that x= 3 but i can find one? please help! x

5x+4=x-12, that equation has variables on both sides, but you are saying you want an equation like that but the answer should equal 3 not -4. in that case you can just make up an equation. here i made this up 2x-1=8+x, in this case x=3

Okay, so for the first part; just to make sure you understand what is happening, and why x = -4;

When making x the subject, or solving for x you will do the following;

Get all the x-terms on one side (for example the left side) and all the free numbers on the other side (for example the right side). This you do as following;

Moving the x-terms;

5x + 4 = x - 12

Subtract x from both sides

5x - x + 4 = x - x - 12

Here you see that the x on the right hand side cancels out;

4x + 4 = - 12

Now, subtract 4 from both sides to move 4 from the left to the right side;

4x + 4 - 4 = - 12 - 4

The 4 cancels out on the left hand side, and you get

4x = - 16

Now you can divide with 4 on both sides to get the four away from the left hand side;

4x/4 = - 16/4

The 4 cancels out on the left hand side and you get;

x = - 4

Now, for the next question it seems like you just have to construct a function like this. It requires a bit imagination, but I can give you one where x = 3, and then you can try to solve it! (and don't worry, I will try to make it easy!)

4x + 2 = 8 + 2x

Now, try to solve that one and see what you get! And remember, there are infinitely many functions where x = 3. I am just giving you one.
