Where in the cell do transcription and translation take place?

Transcription occurs in the nucleus of a cell, this is where single stranded messenger rna is formed by copying the sense strand of dna, mRNA is made by the enzyme rna polymerase. This is then spliced to remove introns (parts of DNA that do not code for anything)

This strand of mRNA leaves the nucleus and goes into the cytoplasm where translation occurs. The mrna strand is read by a ribosome using its meain component, ribosomal rna, which decodes the mRNA strand, once this is done it interacts with transfer RNA which carries an amino acid that correspponds to a specific codon on the mRNA strand. This process continues until the whole mrna strand is read and the stop codon is reached, until then each successive codon that is read codes for another amino acid which is joined on to the previous resulting in the formation of a protein.
