The carbon dioxide in the dense atmosphere creates a greenhouse effect.  Some sunlight (and its energy) still reaches the surface and is reradiated as heat. Heat (or infrared radiation) is trapped beneath the atmosphere, causing an increase in the temperature at the surface.
