the purpose is to determine the genotype of the unknown (which is exhibiting the dominant phenotype).

an individual of unknown genotype is crossed with a homozygous recessive.

if there are any recessive phenotypes in the offspring, the both parents must be homozygous.

if both parents are homozygous, the offspring will all show the dominant phenotype.

the genotype of one only of the organisms is known.
