One flask contained water which was placed above a flame to cause it to boil and have water vapor released. The vapor met methane, ammonia, and hydrogen (the proposed composition of Earth's primitive atmosphere, now proved to be wrong) in another flask which had two electrodes inserted to recreate the continuous lightning storms. The water vapor was then cooled so it could condense after coming out of the electrode flask. Some would trickle into a sample flask, while the rest went into the first flask (boiling water) in a continuous cycle. After a few days, tests on the sample flask revealed that 10-15% of the carbon in the experiment had formed into organic compounds, with 2% being amino acids.
