In Mendel's experiments, it did not matter which plant in the cross provided the male gametes and which provided the female gametes. These so-called reciprocal crosses gave the same results. When it comes to genes on the sex chromosomes, X and Y,  select as many as possible

for genes on the X chromosome, a mother will determine the phenotype of sons.

for genes on the X chromosome, a father will determine the phenotypes for his sons only some of the time.

reciprocal crosses do NOT provide the same results.

a father never passes on X-linked genes (i.e., genes on the X chrosomome) to his sons.
