Labor market discrimination against women takes several forms.  First, there is overt wage discrimination when an employer pays women with the same experience and working under the same conditions a wage less than that paid to men.  A second type of labor market discrimination is known as occupational discrimination and occurs when an employer diverts women into lower paying jobs than men despite both groups having the same education and productive potential.  A third form of gender discrimination can be characterized as premarket discrimination.  This type of discrimination has to do with differential treatment afforded girls by society that ultimately points girls toward lower paying careers when they reach adulthood.
