Nan was studying DNA that lies outside the cell nucleus, thought to have descended as part of independent organisms living in association with precursors to eukaryotic cells. Where might she find such DNA?

   C. Chloroplasts and mitochondria.

Chloroplasts and mitochondria have their own DNA. 

So, I believe the answer is C.
