In general, breaking down large storage molecules into smaller ones releases energy. This energy is stored in ATP molecules for use elsewhere in the body. Catabolism happens when blood sugar is very low and there is not food in the body.

In the case of fat and protein from digested molecules, animals will store all of the energy it can from proteins and fats, and does this through a rather complicated process you can read about in the sources link.
