The cardiovascular system transports nutrients through the blood. Blood flows through arteries to the capillaries lining the intestinal tract, where it absorbs water-soluble nutrients and takes them to the liver. The lymphatic system collects fat-soluble nutrients—including vitamins, long-chain fatty acids, and large proteins—from the villi of the small intestine and transports them through the body, eventually depositing them in the blood for distribution to the cells.
