Life and death for the cell!
The cell membrane is what allows the cell to create a specialised environment inside (protoplasm) within which the chemical reactions it requires for life can occur. Sodium ions are typically pumped out, potassium ions pumped in, pH stabilised with buffers in this little fluid bubble that is the cell. The ion pumps, ion and nutrient channels in the membrane allow the cell to live.
